Children's Mental Health: Signs, Support, and When to Seek Help

Mental health conditions in children are more common than many parents realize. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that approximately one in six children aged 2 to 8 years in the United States has a diagnosed mental, behavioral, or developmental disorder. For older children and adolescents, the rates are higher. Yet mental health challenges in children are frequently missed, dismissed as phases, or attributed to parenting when they actually require professional attention.

Mental Health in Children Is Not the Same as Mental Health in Adults

ADHD is not caused by poor parenting or lack of discipline and responds well to a combination of behavioral interventions and, when appropriate, medication.

Depression in children looks somewhat different from adult depression. Children are more likely to present with irritability than sadness, to have unexplained physical complaints, and to show declining school performance. It is more difficult to diagnose in children but is treatable and should be taken seriously.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) can emerge in childhood, often presenting with ritualistic behaviors, fears of contamination, a need for symmetry, or compulsive reassurance-seeking. Children may not recognize their compulsions as excessive, and parents sometimes accommodate them without realizing this maintains the OCD.

Trauma-related conditions — including PTSD and adjustment disorder — can develop in children following abuse, accidents, family disruption, or other overwhelming experiences. Children process trauma differently than adults and may show regression, nightmares, reenactment in play, or significant behavior changes.

Autism spectrum disorder involves differences in social communication, sensory processing, and patterns of behavior that can significantly affect a child's wellbeing and functioning in social and educational settings. Early identification and support make a meaningful difference.

Warning Signs to Watch For

No single behavior is a definitive indicator of a mental health problem, but patterns and changes from a child's baseline warrant attention. Consider reaching out for professional support if you notice:

• A persistent change in mood, behavior, or personality lasting more than a few weeks
• Significant withdrawal from friends, family, or activities the child previously enjoyed
• Declining academic performance not explained by a specific learning difficulty
• Frequent and unexplained physical complaints (stomachaches, headaches)
• Sleep disturbances — difficulty falling asleep, nightmares, night terrors, or sleeping much more than usual
• Expressions of hopelessness, worthlessness, or excessive fear
• Self-harming behavior, or any mention of not wanting to be alive
• Loss of developmental milestones the child had previously achieved (regression)
• Explosive behavior or intense emotional outbursts that seem out of proportion and are difficult to de-escalate

Trust your instincts as a parent or caregiver. You know your child's baseline better than anyone, and a persistent sense that something is off is worth taking seriously.

How to Support a Child Who Is Struggling

Maintain open, non-judgmental communication. Create regular opportunities for your child to talk — not just during obvious distress moments, but as an ongoing practice. Walking side-by-side (during a car ride or a walk) is often easier for children than face-to-face conversation.

Validate their emotions. Before problem-solving, name and acknowledge what your child is feeling: "It sounds like you are really worried about going to school tomorrow." Children who feel understood are more likely to continue the conversation.

Maintain routine and structure. Predictable daily routines provide a sense of safety and stability that is particularly important for children who are anxious or going through a difficult period.

Be mindful of your own reactions. Children are highly attuned to parental anxiety and distress. Managing your own emotional responses — which may include working with your own therapist — is genuinely protective for your child.

Limit exposure to stressors. While you cannot shield children from all difficulty, being thoughtful about media exposure, adult conflict in front of children, and adult worries shared with children helps protect their mental health.

When to Seek Professional Help

If warning signs have persisted for more than a few weeks, have significantly impaired your child's functioning at home or school, or if your child has expressed any thoughts of self-harm, professional evaluation is the appropriate step.

Start with your child's pediatrician, who can conduct an initial screening and refer to child and adolescent mental health specialists. Child psychologists, licensed child therapists, and child and adolescent psychiatrists are the primary professional resources.

Effective treatments for children's mental health conditions include play therapy (particularly for younger children), CBT adapted for children, parent management training (which involves coaching parents in behavioral strategies), and for some conditions and ages, medication in conjunction with therapy.

Early intervention matters. Mental health conditions in children that are identified and treated early are less likely to become entrenched and are more responsive to treatment. Seeking help is not a sign of parenting failure — it is one of the most important things a parent can do for a struggling child.
